Francis Ford Coppola wanted a certain look for the different characters in the movie. Here's what I am thinking what Francis thought in 1972:
Vito: Strong presence on the screen. This character must look like a caring grandfather but, when he needs to he can be harsh.
Michael: Exact copy of Vito (except the grandfather part).
THIS relationship between the two characters might give us a clue as to who becomes the next Godfather if Vito dies.

But why do you think francis picked micheal to be the next godfather. Wouldnt it make more sense if sonny was the godfather before he died because he was acting like a leader unlike michael who went of to Italy?

Thats why Michael went to Italy and that is why Tom was consigliere at the time. Sonny was the Don before he died. Michael couldn't have been a Don before Sonny because he was in Italy.
